Autism Spectrum Disorder Tutoring (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be characterized by deficits in social interaction and communication skills. Because deficits in language skills and understanding others may be present, individuals diagnosed with ASD may demonstrate deficits in comprehending oral and/or written communication, reasoning skills, problem solving, and organizational tasks, as well as being able to accurately read social cues and the perspective of others. Rather than adopting these skills naturally, individuals diagnosed with ASD may benefit from explicit 1:1 instruction and coaching to focus and strengthen skills such as self-awareness, self-advocacy, organization, help-seeking, self-care, and interpersonal skills. Rather than following a set curriculum to teach language and social communication skills, New Frontiers in Learning utilizes a cognitive modeling approach, supporting individuals diagnosed with ASD to identify areas of skill deficit unique to their experiences as a learner in order to develop skills and systems to succeed in areas where they are directly struggling.

We offer individualized one on one academic tutoring at the middle school, high school, and college levels in content areas such as Math, Science, Computer/Technology, Economics/Finance, Foreign Language and the Humanities.

Subject area tutoring is directed through an executive functioning lens, where coaches and students work through the skills necessary to learn subject matter by exploring strategies such as preteaching, reteaching, and how to use textbooks and online resources to learn. Instead of strictly tutoring, we are using the tutoring process to help students learn how to learn (metacognition).

Autism Spectrum Disorder tutoring sessions focus on helping students get the help they need in content, while also assessing the resources they have outside of tutoring sessions. Students are encouraged during tutoring sessions to access their teachers, professors, peers, and other available resources. Coaches check in with their students before and after sessions to make sure they are prepared and are following through with additional studying and review. Tutoring sessions also focus on process. Before a coach finishes a session, they develop a plan for next steps in the studying process. We make sure that our students have a plan for HOW to study, not just when to study. We teach students how to study for different types of tests in different classes. We focus on closing the gap between students thinking they know information and true understanding.
